NCSLI Awards
...Continued

Pictured above is Mechanical Engineering Student Charlie Stroup being presented the NCSLI Award by Dr. Robert Hocken. According to Dr. Hocken, the NCSLI each year provides the scholarship money to fund students working on metrology projects. A competition is held and students submit one page essays on their projects. A panel of faculty judge the projects and Dr. Hocken awards the scholarships to the two best.

Congratulations to Amit Suratkar and Charlie Stroup!

High Power and High Temperature Material...

On July 11, 2007, four from Northrop Grumman, Baltimore, led by the Chief Scientist Michael Fitelson; and Eric Phillips from DMEA (Defense Microelectronic Activity), program manager, with Ray Tsu, Steve Mosier, Lee Casperson, Barry Burks conducted a strategic meeting at UNCC on Dr. Ray Tsu’s on-going contract: ‘High Power and High Temperature Material-SiC for Military Applications’. The photo at top shows an explanation by David Braddock, President of OSEMI, who built the high temperature CVD for the growth of SiC; and included Mike Fitelson, the Chief Scientist of NG, and three of his people – Marc Sherwin, Narsingh Singh and Mark Usefara, together with the Program Engineer from DMEA (Defense Microelectronic Activity).

The photo above was taken at a celebration at the conclusion of the meeting at LAVA with Steve Mosier, Director of Research. Lee Casperson (ECE) and Barry Burks (CRI) joined the group during part of the discussion on the progress as well as possible future role of Northrop Grumman with opto-electronic research. Said Dr. Tsu, “Dr. Fitelson assured me he is impressed by our work and that he wants to explore future collaboration with UNCC.” Before the meeting, the NG-DMEA group was met by Dean Johnson, who discovered that several mutual friends emerged. Dr. Tsu concluded with “the world is never too big!”
